UC Santa Barbara is committed to creating and sustaining a campus environment that allows universal access to all persons.  In doing so all new construction on campus must be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Chapter 11b of the California Building Code.

Building Renovations

When undergoing a renovation, the “Path of Travel” (defined as an identifiable accessible route including sidewalks, streets and parking/public transportation to the specific area of alteration) shall be compliant. When alterations are made to existing buildings or facilities, the term “Path of Travel” also includes the toilet and bathing facilities, telephones, drinking fountains and signs serving the area of work.

The Code applies rules to projects depending on the project’s cost relative to the “Valuation Threshold”.  The current valuation threshold is $200,399 and is updated each year in January. Different rules apply to projects whether or not the Adjusted Construction Cost (the cost of construction less the cost of Path of Travel upgrades) exceeds the Valuation Threshold.
